Stair Tread Rugs
Beautifying your home while protecting against slips and falls
Hall runner rugs are extremely popular. Just like stair runners, they are long, thin, and bound on the top and bottom and two sides.
Unlike stair runners, they need no expert installation typically, often none at all. They do not need to be stapled or attached with tackless strips as they are usually just laid down.
Hall runner rugs prices are all over, no surprise as you might use a discount industrial hall runner mat type in some places and an antique Persian Rug in another that costs tens of thousands of dollars. Hall Runner accessories like pads are sometimes used as well, for example often they are laid down on top of a carpet pad. This is usually one designed for hallway rug runners and pre made to the correct width and length. Pads seem to run about 3 dollars a foot and up. Most carpet runners are two to three feet wide and up to 22 feet, although they may be up to 5 feet wide and much longer as well.
Compared to wall to wall stair carpeting, they are both much easier to install and leave parts of the floor visible. If you floor is made of a beautiful material like oak, cherry, hickory, black walnut, Brazilian walnut, cypress, tigerwood, or other hardwood, or perhaps a great looking tile or slate, they leave some it it visible.
For example in my office building, the main halls have either slate or oak floors, and the hall runner rugs leave quite a bit visible and it looks quite elegant. In less visible areas, such as some floor halls that have private offices and limited traffic, the floor is made of construction grade materials and covered by wall to wall carpeting which is much more economical.
The variety in runners is simply amazing. One vendors lists about a dozen solid colors as well as a variety of styles, such as Casual Runners, Contemporary Runners, Country Runners, European Runners, Formal Runners, Traditional Runners, and Transition Runners. They have hundreds of choices available. Decided can be difficult. Even the local stores have enormous variety, never mind going online.
Often runners are sold by the foot and cut to size. They are sometimes listed just as Stair Runners, with the details specifying that they are suitable for stairs and halls as well.
So, where can you find them? Obviously carpet and rugs stores will have them. So will many department and discount stores. Home improvement stores often carry a large selection as well.
I like looking online even if I eventually buy locally. being able to see what's available from the comfort of your own home. Often even with shipping prices are cheaper or at least competitive.
